Rudolf Otto (theologian, philosopher, author) describes the numinous in his writings, but it has many other definitions [see Costelli, Khoury, Zimmerman et al.] Though it may have religious components, it belongs to no creed or belief system, it belongs to nothing. It is nonreligious, or areligious. It’s not salvation, it’s not an “answer,” it’s not in opposition to the void/chaos. It may actually intensify chaos.
The dictionary definition is “the inherent unpredictability in the behavior of a complex natural system (such as the atmosphere, boiling water, or the beating heart).”
